Forteo Pen Storage Temperatures. Teriparatide, is sold under the brand name Forteo and manufactured by Eli Lilly and Company.
Teriparatide (brand name: Forteo(r) Terrosa(r)) is a medicine used to treat severe osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a common disease that causes bones to become fragile and brittle so that they break (fracture) more easily even as a result of normal activity (as distinct from a fall).
Fractures are painful and restrict a person’s ability to carry out their normal daily tasks. Teriparatide reduces the risk of a broken bone or fracture. Your Forteo pens must bestored in the refrigerator between 2°C and 8°C (36°F and 46°F) at all times.
Once opened, your Forteo pen must be used within 28 days maximum, whether refrigerated or not.
According to Eli Lilly and Company, they advise “when traveling and refrigeration is unavailable, the Forteo delivery device can remain at room temperature conditions (25°C /77°F) for a total of 36 hours.”
For people with osteoporosis traveling with Forteo pens, these strict storage requirements imply that:
When refrigeration isn’t possible, when outside of home, you can transport your pens without refrigeration, but only if the ambient temperature is under (25°C /77°F) and for a maximum of 36 hours.
When the ambient temperature is above (25°C /77°F) you must use a cooling case that keeps your pens cool, similar to the MedActiv Medicube.
You must put your Forteo pens in a refrigerator as soon as you arrive at your destination.
